Asgard

The NixOS desktop workstation, with Niri, Noctalia, gaming support, and Secure Boot.

Asgard is an x86_64-linux NixOS workstation: an Intel CPU with an AMD GPU, dual-booting Windows. It is exported as nixosConfigurations.asgard and its source is hosts/nixos/asgard/.

What the host selects

  • Profiles: the NixOS desktop and development profiles, plus the Secure Boot and gaming modules directly.
  • User: cbrst, with Zsh as the login shell and membership in wheel and gamemode. NixOS owns the account itself; Home Manager owns what is inside the home directory.
  • Home Manager: embedded in the system configuration with the shared system package set (useGlobalPkgs) and per-user package installation (useUserPackages). It imports the user's home.nix and the development, desktop-linux, and gaming home profiles.

Host-specific values

Settings overridegaming.vrrOutput set to the AOC AG276QZD2 monitor, enabling on-demand VRR in Niri
Tailscalecbrst is the Tailscale operator, so the tray and CLI work without sudo
Blacklisted modulesbrcmfmac is blacklisted. The onboard BCM43602 Wi-Fi is unused (the host is wired), and the driver fails to enter D3, which aborts suspend and can leave the GPU unable to resume
Extra overlay and cacheAffinity overlay and the cache.forall.systems binary cache

Boot loader

Asgard boots with Limine, with Secure Boot signing enabled and up to ten generations in the menu. An extra entry chain-loads the Windows Boot Manager. The menu runs at 2560×1440 and is themed with the Meowsoot dark palette: no wallpaper, a dark backdrop, and Meowsoot colours for the help text and the terminal palette.

Hardware

hardware-configuration.nix describes the real disks and must be regenerated for any other machine. It enables:

  • Linux firmware, 32-bit graphics support, AMD GPU in the initrd, and Intel microcode updates.
  • The Btrfs layout described in Installing Asgard, with zstd compression on every subvolume.
  • An NTFS games volume at /mnt/games, owned by the user and mounted with nofail so a missing disk does not block boot.
